When Śrī Moraya Maharaj was five years of age, Moraya became ill with a fever that was spreading within the town. His parents attempted to treat him but were not succeeding. Vāmanabhaṭaa started offering prayers to Moreshwara, fearing that his son, for whom he performed penance to Moreshwara for many years, might leave us.
Soon a Gosavi (ascetic / monk) visited their place and came near Moraya’s bed and said, ‘Dear God, what is this? You still have to complete your incarnation and why are you leaving now?’ With the touch of him, Moraya Maharaj stood up in an instant as if he had woken up from sleep. He raised his hand. He sat on Moraya’s bed and recited Gurumantra (sacred spell to be given by the Master) in Moraya’s ear. He presented him with Kafani and Rudraksha garland.
On his way back, Gosavi said to Vāmanabhaṭa Bhata, ‘You should not worry at all.’ The life savior of Śrī Moraya was the Gosavi, a peripatetic monk of the Fourteenth Akhada, Yogiraja Śrī Nayanabhāratī Maharaj. A thought came to Śrī Moraya’s mind that I should meet my spiritual master – Sadguru, Mokshaguru. Without Sadhguru, one cannot become successful in spiritual practice, and cannot attain knowledge.
Will I meet my spiritual master, Sadguru? His desire for a master was increasing day by day. One day in the morning, after worshiping Mayureśvara, Moraya Gosavi went home. At this time, he saw a divine figure in the outer courtyard. Clotted hairs on the head, three horizontal markings with Ash (Bhasma Tripundra) on the forehead, Rudraksha necklace in the neck, saffron shroud on the body and Sandals (Khadava) on the feet. Seeing such a divine monk, Moraya Gosavi’s feet trembled, his mind began to melt. Both exchanged glances. The heart recognized the heart’s impulses. Moraya Gosavi dashed forward, clutching the sadhu’s feet tightly. Tears flowed from his eyes. With his tears, he divinely washed his master’s feet. ‘Maharaj, be gracious to me, offer me grace,’ Śrī Moraya Gosavi begged. Please accept me as a disciple. The sadhu placed his hand on Śrī Moraya’s head and said, “you have come under my shelter as of today. I have accepted you as a disciple.’’
Śrī Moraya Gosavi was overjoyed with such delightful words. Śrī Nayanabhāratī instructed Śrī Moraya Gosavi mantras and various meditative yoga techniques and told him, “Now you do penance at Theur, I’m going to go on a pilgrimage as well.” Śrī Moraya Gosavi was saddened by the prospect of Sadguru’s separation. ‘Maharaj, take me with you on your pilgrimage,’ he requested. I will assist you. My desire to serve you continues to be incomplete.
‘Oh dear, don’t come on pilgrimage,’ Śrī Nayanabhāratī said. “Travel makes it harder to engage in spiritual practice. Now, if you wish to serve me, serve Theur’s Chiṁtāmaṇī”.
Śrī Moraya Gosavi expressed Sadguru Śrī Nayanabhāratī farewell with a heart full of sorrow. Śrī Moraya Gosavi inquired as he was departing, ‘Now when will we meet again?’ ‘I will grant you Darśana when you remember with the yearning for Darśana,’ Śrī Nayanabhāratī stated. I shall give you Darśana at Chinchwad after a few years in the latter part of my life.’ Yogiraj Nayanbharti walked away. Moraya Gosavi bid him farewell with teary eyes.
Śrī Moraya Gosavi dedicated his life to the worship of Maṁgalamūrtī. One day Śrī Moraya Gosavi had a strong desire to meet his Guru Nayanabhāratī. “Maharaj, you should now stay in Chinchwad Kṣetra,” Śrī Moraya Gosavi bent down with Devotion. “I shall also be able to serve you and take pleasure in the regular sight (Darśana) of you.” Śrī Nayanabhāratī accepted his prayers and stayed in Chinchwad. Śrī Moraya Gosavi’s desire was fulfilled. In the year 1559, Śrī Nayanabhāratī left for heavenly abode.
