A Sacred Sanjeevan Samadhi-Shrine temple of Śrī Moraya Gosavi Maharaj

Sanjeevan Samadhi Temple of Śrīman Mahasadhu Śrī Moraya Gosavi Maharaj is situated on the bank of Pavana river which flows southwards. In 1561 AD Śrīman Mahasadhu Śrī Moraya Gosavi Maharaj took Sanjivan Samadhi (Supreme, Pure & transcendent state of consciousness) on Mārgaśīrṣa Vadya Shashti (sixth day of dark half of the Mārgaśīrṣa Month). He was 186 years old at that time. After Śrī Moraya Gosavi Maharaj’s samadhi, his son Śrī Chiṁtāmaṇī Maharaj installed a Vināyaka with his consorts Siddhibuddhi on the top of the cave, exactly above the samadhi-Shrine of Moraya Gosavi and is called Samadhi Vināyaka. This Shrine is sacred.

The construction of this temple began on October 27, 1658, and was completed on June 13, 1659, according to English dates. The temple’s structure is made up of plain stone. There is an assembly hall after entering the temple. The Sanjeevan Samadhi-Shrine of Śrīman Mahasadhu Śrī Moraya Gosavi Maharaj is located after the huge assembly hall.

The exquisite black stone statue of two-armed Gaṇapatī with his consorts Siddhi and Buddhi is set on the Samadhi by Śrī Chiṁtāmaṇī Maharaj, the son of Śrī Moraya Maharaj. Śrī Moraya Maharaj’s Shrine is located beneath it. A massive Shivling construction of Śrī Arjuneśvar can be found in the outer sanctum. From there, the road leads to Śrī Moraya Gosavi’s Samadhi. A stone inscription can be found on the right side of the sanctum sanctorum, behind Śrī Arjuneśvar. It consists of five clear and readable lines.

The construction of the temple started on Kartik Shuddha Dwadashi (Twelfth day of bright half of the Kartika month) Vilambi Samvatsara in the Shaka year 1580 AD and was completed on Ashadha Shuddha Chaturthi (Fourth day of bright half of the Ashadh month) Vikari Samvatsara in the Shaka year 1581 AD. The structure is constructed as such that Vināyaka placed on the Shrine of Śrī Moraya Gosavi is visible from the place of Chiṁtāmaṇī Maharaj Shrine.

In the premises of Śrī Moraya Gosavi Maharaj temple there are several Shrines of Sapta Purushas (Shrines of pontiffs in the lineage of Moraya Maharaj), Eighth Shrine is of adopted Dharaṇīdhara Maharaj. Other Shrines such as Śrī Vināyaka Maharaj Deo, Śrī Digambar Maharaj, Śrī Kamalakar Maharaj Deo, Śrī Moroba Maharaj, Yogiraj Śrī Nayanabhāratī Gosavi Maharaj (Guru of Śrī Moraya Gosavi) and Vighneshwar Maharaj Deo are present here. All the Shrines are structured in stone. On the west side of the temple, the Pavana River flows southward. There is a road on the east side. On the north side, there is a garden and on the south side there is a large field. On this site, the Sanjivan Samadhi celebration is held. On the occasion of the festival, musical concerts and food distributions to thousands of people are organized.
