About Śrī Maṁgalamūrtī

Śrī Moraya Gosavi Maharaj used to visit Morgaon on Chaturthi—every fourth day of the month and worshiped Mayureśvara with Devotion.

Once in a rainy season on the Chaturthi crossing all the watercourses, trampling through the mud Śrī Maharaj reached Morgaon but the priest left by shutting down the temple doors. Being agonized with the fact that even after reaching here with great efforts I am unable to see my Lord Mayureśvara Śrī Moraya Gosavi Maharaj sat under the Tarti tree (Name of a thorny plant) with tears in his eyes. With a great amount of grief he praised the Mayureśvara with a words

“तुझीये भेटीची बहू आस रे मोरया, देखीता बहुत झाले दिवस रे मोरया”

meaning “I am hopeful to see you Moraya (Mayureśvara), It has been a long time since I have seen you.”

His invocation pleased Śrī Mayureśvara, who appeared before Śrī Moraya Gosavi. Śrī Moraya Gosavi was overjoyed to see Mayureśvara’s delightful form and bowed to him.

“Oh Dear,” Mayureśvara responded to him. “You’re aged. I cannot see your woeful condition because of the pilgrimage you do every month. I accept your devotion. There would be no need to visit Morgaon hereafter as I will be accompanying you to Chinchwad. On the next day while giving Arghya (oblation of water) to Sun in Karha river you will be blessed with an idol of mine in the form of Tāṁdalā (a rude stone smeared with red lead and used as an idol). Take it to Chinchwad and bring it here only on the fourth day of the bright half of the Bhādrapada and Māgha months. There is no distinction between both of us.” Mayureśvara disappeared after blessing with such words.

Accordingly, Śrī Moraya Gosavi received an Idol in Gaṇeśa Kuṁḍa, in Karha River and he ceremoniously placed it in front of Mayureśvara and worshiped him ardently. At the same time a garland from Mayureśvara’s idol fell onto Moraya Gosavi in the presence of everyone. This event happened in 1489 AD. While singing, Śrī Moraya Gosavi brought the idol to Chinchwad. The next day, he consecrated it as per the scriptures. This idol is present in Maṁgalamūrtī Wāḍā at Chinchwad.

Śrī Koṭhāreśvara

There is an idol of Lord Gaṇeśa facing in north direction named Śrī Koṭhāreśvara at Maṁgalamūrtī Wāḍā. Śrī Moraya Gosavi Maharaj installed this idol at the place where he used to worship Lord Gaṇeśa hence the name has been given as Koṭhāreśvara. Earlier this idol was at the backside of Śrī Maṁgalamūrtī. After the installation of Śrī Maṁgalamūrtī in the present hall, Śrī Koṭhāreśvara is visible all days. Earlier the regular worship of Śrī Koṭhāreśvara was performed from the back side. The idol of Śrī Koṭhāreśvara used to be visible only when an idol of Śrī Maṁgalamūrtī went to Bhādrapada or Māgha Yātrā (Pilgrimage) until his return from Morgaon. At that time, special worship and offerings are performed to Śrī Koṭhāreśvara for ten days. Śrī Maṁgalamūrtī is now seated in a large wooden mandapa (Assembly hall). A spacious hall has been built in front of Śrī Koṭhāreśvara. Now, both Śrī Koṭhāreśvara and Śrī Maṁgalamūrtī are visible every day.

The anniversary of Śrī Koṭhāreśvara is celebrated on Shravan Shuddha Shashti (sixth day of bright half of the Shravan Month) during which the compositions composed by Śrī Moraya Gosavi Maharaj are sung in front of Śrī Koṭhāreśvara.
